Internet2

Internet2 is a non-profit advanced technology community owned by its members of the research and education communities, industry, and government. As of February 2014, Internet2 has over 500 members including 252 U.S. universities, 82 leading corporations, 68 affiliate members including government agencies, 41 regional and state education networks, More than 65 national research and education networking partners representing over 100 countries. Internet2 community operates Internet2 network.

Advanced Networking Technology

Internet2 runs over Internet Protocol network and uses advanced technology like dynamic circuit network called Internet2 DCN. Internet2 allow user based allocation of data circuit to provide unique set of global capabilities to members for the development of new applications and services including a 100 gigabit-per-second network that not only deliver secure and reliable production services for high performance needs, but creates a powerful experimental platform for the development of new applications. The fourth generation of the Internet2 is now providing an unprecedented 8.8 Terabits of capacity.

Internet2 community develops and deploy network technology keeping in the mind future of the Internet. These technologies includes various tools such as large-scale network performance measurement and management tool, secure identity and access management tools and capabilities such as scheduling high-bandwidth, high-performance circuits.

Objective

Internet2 is committed to provide secure, reliable and cost-effective network to research and education community that satisfy their bandwidth-intensive requirements.

The objectives of the Internet2 are:

• Developing and maintaining a leading-edge network.
• Fully exploiting the capabilities of broadband connections through the use of new-generation applications.
• Transferring new network services and applications to all levels of educational use, and eventually the broader Internet community.

Cloud Services and Applications

With the help of Internet2 now it is possible to use the network for the innovations, creativity and development in a way that was not previously possible. Robust and high quality video conferencing is now available to Internet2 participants. Neurosurgeons can now video conference with other expert in field during an operation in high resolution format with no apparent time lag.

Internet2 NET+ cloud solutions supporting every mission area and function are now evolving – with some already a reality.

• ICE Healthcare System
  Internet2 NET+ is supporting ICE Health System that will bring an innovative patient care service to the education and practicing communities featuring a scalable EHR with enhanced patient, practice, and learning management systems and offering data sharing opportunities for large scale research projects.
  The benefit of the universities and ICE collaboration will be a secure, cloud-based service able to meet the patient care, education, business, research and administrative requirements of institutions, professional offices and clinics.
• Azure
  Azure is an open and flexible cloud platform that enables you to quickly build, deploy and manage applications across a global network of Microsoft-managed datacentres.
  The Internet2 NET+ Azure service is a focused effort between Microsoft and Internet2 to support the use of cloud infrastructure for academic research and instruction. Azure Services meet many compliance higher education compliance needs, e.g. FERPA, HIPPA.
